Ockenden Lodge is one of Sussex’s friendliest and longest-established masonic Lodges. Explore our website and learn more about Freemasonry, what we do in a Lodge and how you can join our band of brothers.
Ockenden Lodge has been at the cornerstone of the Sussex Masonic community since 1874 building bonds of friendship, promoting personal growth among its members and making a difference to the lives of others. Rooted in the ancient traditions of Freemasonry, Ockenden Lodge continues to uphold the core masonic values of integrity, fellowship and kindness to others.
Today, there are some 35 members or brethren in our Lodge aged from 35 to 80+. We are open to new members joining us at any time of the year. There’s no waiting list as there’s no restriction in the number of people who can join. Visit our ‘how do I become a mason’ page for more information or use the contact form to email our secretary.
Our members live across Mid-Sussex: in Balcombe, Ardingly, Haywards Heath, Crawley, and Lindfield, as well as Brighton, Hove, Eastbourne and Peacehaven.
Some of us are retired, some are entrepreneurs, others work in businesses across many trades and professions, including:
- Public transport
- Legal
- Medicine & healthcare
- Communications
- Catering
- Energy
- Estate agency
- Financial services
Some of us have been active masons for more than 50 years. Others joined Ockenden recently as Initiates or moved to our Lodge from others in Sussex, Surrey and London.

We’re a friendly Lodge – our meetings are well attended by members as well as visiting masons who delight in returning again and again. And we’re delighted to welcome them – it’s a sign of a happy, thriving and popular Lodge.

A bold vision and a worthwhile purpose
We have an inspiring vision for our Lodge and a clear purpose. We’re proud of our heritage that stretches back 150 years, but we remain a forward-thinking community with valuable charitable programmes that aim to make a positive difference to people across Mid-Sussex. At the same time, we stand ready to support our own members in times of personal need and difficulty.
One of our aims is to put a smile on everyone’s face
Good food at our Festive Boards (formal dinners), the occasional beer in the bar after a meeting and good-natured conversation all help create a great atmosphere. Friendliness and support for one another are among Ockenden’s strengths and attractions.
As someone was overheard saying:
“Ockenden Lodge has a real personality and quite a few characters. It does things its way and that’s why it’s one of my favourite Lodges to visit.”
And just in case you’re wondering – we don’t discuss politics or religion at our meetings nor are we about business sales and promotion. So, if money is motivating your interest in masonry, you’ll need to think again.
